Partimos de que los estereotipos no son productos solamente elaborados por la actividad cognitiva individual, son también productos sociales y colectivos y de poder dentro de una sociedad, funcionan como justificadores ideológicos, legitiman las relaciones sociales y construyen la identidad social del sujeto; por lo que su estudio no debe considerar solamente las actuales relaciones intergrupales, sino que, también debe estar familiarizado con la historia de estas relaciones.
