British firms that have been battered by Donald Trumps announcement of tariffs on exports to the US will be given billions in government support.Like almost every other country in the world, the UK is now contending with 10% tariffs on almost all the products it ships out to the US which was its largest single-country trading partner last year. The move has left many businesses concerned about the rapidly shifting market and whether they can cope with a potential fall in demand from across the Atlantic.Particularly affected are those hit by the additional 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium products and cars.Today, the Treasury announced UK Export Finance (UKEF) will get the power to increase its support for businesses by 20 billion with up to 10 billion for those significantly impacted in the short term by the current situation.UKEF, a department of the British Government, aims to ensure no viable UK export fails for lack of finance or insurance by smoothing out the challenge...

Community members, housing leaders and government officials gathered Monday at Deep Run Recreation Center to discuss the challenges in Henricos housing market from skyrocketing home prices to shortages in supply and barriers to affordability. The roundtable discussion, hosted by Supervisor Misty Roundtree as part of her Three Chopt Chats community meeting series, examined a crisis that she said has become bigger than one locality or the commonwealth but rather has turned into national issue. This housing issue is particularly important and personal to me, Roundtree said, recounting her journey from buying her first home in her early 20s using the GI Bill to losing two homes in foreclosure and spending years as a renter. Now I'm remarried and in a place where I can afford to buy, but I am receiving the sticker shock that so many people are [experiencing], she said. The price of entry has changed so dramatically and it frightens me.During the past five years, median home sale price...

In January and February, county governments in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and North Carolina began passing resolutions containing nearly identical language. The resolutions oppose what they refer to as an abuse of the Antiquities Act of 1906. Enacted by Congress as people went west and frequently looted from historic sites, the law gave presidents the authority to protect any area on federal lands by declaring it a national monument. A deep anti-federal current runs through the county resolutions, and they express support for extractive industries and a general objection to the designation of lands, whether private lands or government lands as national monuments, wilderness, wilderness study areas, wildlife preserves, open space, or other conservation land.Hutchinson regularly communicates with a network of private property rights activists who jokingly refer to themselves as the Secret Meeting. He says that when reporters ask him for the groups name, the response might be, If we...

The government last year also required most schools to raise tuition for international students a minimum of nine per cent. They (schools) certainly have their work cut out for them as they look at their own budgets, she said. So our job is to continue to monitor and to engage with them in ensuring that they are all viable.Story continues below advertisementBarbrick said that a balance w...

Almost 250 people have been imprisoned for breaching antisocial behaviour injunctions (asbis) since 2020, with people being jailed for sleeping rough, begging, feeding birds and making a noise.Analysis from academics at the universities of York and Coventry found that out of 242 cases examined from 2020-2024, there were 72 cases of imprisonment for general nuisance, 61 for abusive language and 51 for noise. They found that 57% of people did not have legal representation at the breach hearing that led to their imprisonment: out of 97 recorded cases, 55 defendants were not represented.People are not getting proper representation and they get sent to prison for sometimes long periods, weeks and months. Theres no sentencing guidance for this, said Prof Caroline Hunter from York Law School. People might have a lot of issues that need to be dealt with, but theyre not dealt with by sending them to prison. An asbi is a civil injunction used to tackle antisocial behaviour, and can be issued...
