On a crisp Sunday morning, the Pet Pavilion at Sydneys Royal Easter Show smells of donuts and hay.A crowd mills around a fenced-off patch of astroturf, where colourful jumps set to different heights are arranged in a long row.They are here to see 26 competitors take part in kaninhop, also known as rabbit showjumping, which is making its first appearance at the show. As the name suggests, kaninhop has its origins in Sweden, but it has spread globally since the 1970s.Natasha McGarry is a senior judge at the show, and also president of the Rabbit Hopping Society of Australia.The four-time national Rabbit Hopper of the Year, who lives with 25 house-trained rabbits, fell in love with the sport as a teenager in 2013 and has been competing in the greater Sydney area ever since.There are four events: straight course, crooked course, high jump and long jump.McGarry explains the straight course rules to the curious crowd: the winner is the rabbit that collects the least rail knocks, followed b...

Retail sales in Great Britain rose last month amid a sharp increase in consumers spending at department stores, hardware shops and clothes outlets.Reflecting a stronger economic backdrop than feared, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed sales volumes rose by 1% on the month, although spending at supermarkets fell after a bumper month in January.City economists had forecast a 0.4% monthly fall amid weak levels of consumer confidence, after the economy came close to stagnation in the second half of last year as households tightened their belts.The figures will come as a boost for the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, after the governments independent economic forecaster slashed its growth forecasts for 2025 in half at the spring statement on Wednesday.The ONS also said on Friday that the UK economy grew by 0.1% in the final quarter of 2024, confirming its initial estimate made in February.However, it also revised up its growth estimates by 0.1 percentage points for each...
