By the time they reach first grade, children begins absorbing new material like a sponge. What do first graders learn? For starters, they understand at least 20,000 words, have some impressive spelling skills, and can sense how words and language work. In math, they're getting faster by the week at adding and subtracting, and they're learning to solve word problems. Despite these accomplishments, though, your first grader still needs plenty of encouragement.
