'Pick a finger or toe' assault man gets sentence suspended after brutal attacks

A man who spent 20 months in jail after "disgusting, disturbing and obnoxious" attacks on two ex-girlfriends had the rest of a combined seven-year sentence suspended today. Ben Curry, 24, beat and threatened a former partner at knifepoint "to pick a finger or a toe" and subjected another ex-girlfriend to a 40-minute attack. Judge Keenan Johnson imposed consecutive sentences totalling seven years but backdated them to August 2023 when Curry went into custody, with the rest of the term suspended. Judge Johnson was furnished with a forensic psychological assessment of Curry. Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court heard today that it showed he consistently and positively engaged with the psychologist whose report gave a graphic account of his "horrific" and traumatic childhood difficulties. It detailed the work he had undergone to regulate his emotional responses and stay away from trouble.
